However the rules say the tag has to be applied and I agree completely with the rule. If you say that a defensive player was "in a position to" apply the tag, why not give an out when a player is "in a position to" catch a fly ball? What about a hitter "being in a position to" hit a home run? Baseball is and should be about what players do, not what they could do. PS I am totally biased in favour of Derek Jeter and the Yankees.
